Danakil Desert Landscape

Towers of salt and a riverbed colored by crystallized salt create an otherworldly landscape in Ethiopia’s Danakil Desert. Sitting more than 300 feet (90 meters) below sea level, with temperatures reaching 120 degrees Fahrenheit (49 degrees Celsius), local inhabitants prize the Danakil for one thing: its salt deposits.

Travertine Chimneys, Djibouti

Travertine chimneys near Lake Abbe, Djibouti, were created by hot springs depositing calcium carbonate—the same process that creates stalactites and stalagmites. Some of the formations reach 165 feet (50 meters) near the lake located on the Ethiopia-Djibouti border.

Stone-Marked Grave, Libya

Carefully chosen light and dark stones mark the isolated grave of a herder who died between 5,000 and 3,000 years ago. As rainfall dwindled, the inhabitants of Libya's remote Fezzan region congregated around scattered oases.

Puu Oo Vent on Mount Kilauea

When Kilauea volcano's Puu Oo vent was active I visited it often. On this particular cold January morning the winds were light, which allowed the superheated gases and steam to rise straight up into the sky from the glowing and spattering vents within Puu Oo. The cold air pushed the hot plumes back down in a swirling motion at sunrise. This allowed for the beautiful colors. Shot with a Nikon Dslr and the Nikon 10.5 lens from the north rim of Puu Oo vent. 30-second exposure.

Mt. Kilauea Eruption at Night, Hawaii

Lava from Mt Kilaeau flowed down the slopes via lava tubes into the ocean and the resulting violent explosions generated such large steam columns as to pull up waterspouts from the sea. This spectacular display continued into the night and also called down lightning from the sky.
